Glacier Trip Day 1

Overnight train trip was lots of fun. We rolled out of Portland on time, after having time to relax in the Metropolitan Lounge. Our dinner was boxed but not too bad. The trip through the Gorge was fantastic. Got to watch the fir lined Cascade area give way to the barren ground of eastern Oregon before heading north to Spokane.

Teek, Alison, Sophie, and I had some time to relax in the sightseer car that was attached to the PDX train. The "diner" car came attached to the Seattle train and met up with us after midnight in Spokane. I vaguely remember being asleep and then waking up as the train crawled to a stop for the link.

We arrived at the East Glacier station around 10 the next day. We followed the Flathead river into Glacier National Park. Passing Whitefish, West Glacier, and Issac Walton on the way. Patrick spotted mountain sheep perched on the ledges by Goat Lick where the minerals leach out from the red rock.

After getting settled into our cabin we found Two Medicine just 15 miles down the road. Hiked into Paradise Point and made a couple of casts with spinner rods. The wind was blowing about 15 miles an hour that day onto the river creating a number of whitecaps breaking on the surface.

The next day we drove further north up to St Mary Lake and onto St Mary Falls and another mile up to Virginia Falls. Will post those pictures when we get home.

Yesterday, drove north beyond St Mary to Many Glacier. Hiked into Lake Josephine, probably the most beautiful lake I have seen on either side of the Atlantic. Wildflowers were blooming in a small meadow surrounded by waterfalls from melting glaciers. Patrick and I struck out fishing again, but agree that this is better than work.

Today we are at Whitefish having a beer at the Great Northern Brewing Company, the only place I have found so far with Wi-Fi.
